Interview w/ Casie Stewart – The Benefits of Hiring the Right Influencer

MD Media Inc. had the pleasure of speaking with influencer Casie Stewart about the power of “influence”.

Influencer – noun: a person who has the power to influence many people, as through social media or traditional media

Casie Stewart, Influencer

What are the benefits of hiring an influencer?

If you’re looking to build sales or brand recognition, using an influencer can help showcase your brand to a new audience, increase followers, and create content you can reshare. You want to partner with someone who has a good reputation and is a good representation your brand.

How can influencer leverage or champion a brand?

There’s heaps of ways an influencer can champion a brand. It’s like hiring a jack-of-all-trades that can write, edit, publish, build audience, and be a spokesperson for your brand.  Aside from creating branded content for their own profiles, think about how you can leverage their unique skills and the many social platforms available.

I really like when one of my partners brings me in BEFORE the campaign is ready to launch and asks my input on what works best with their idea.

Some examples of brand partnerships I’ve enjoyed doing:

  • Event host
  • Speaker
  • FB/Instagram Live
  • Instagram/Snapchat/Twitter takeover
  • Periscope
  • Hosted dinner
  • Destination/Travel sponsorship
  • Brand strategy – think of your influencer like a consultant
  • Curated content ex. List, collection

What should companies look for when seeking out an influencer?

Do your research. Make a shortlist and then go over content from their blog, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook. Follow them. You can learn a lot about someone from their social updates.

Have they worked with any competitors in the last year? Are they a subject matter expert? Do you like their content? Could you see your brand mixed in with theirs? Have they ever mentioned your brand? Is their content and voice consistent?

If you need a background check, call an industry expert for their opinion. (Ask me!)

What brands are you most attracted to?

Ones that fit with my lifestyle; I love travelling, good food, nice clothes, and the latest technology. I also enjoy relaxing experiences like the spa (who doesn’t!), innovative beauty products, or anything anti-aging!

Does a brand have to be a good fit before you agree to promote?

100%. If a brand isn’t a good fit, it’s not worth trying to make it ‘seem’ authentic because you can see right through it. It’s important to follow things you like doing, an influencer has a duty to their audience to be honest and authentic.

What is your favorite part about being an influencer?

Over the past few years I’ve done some really amazing things I can’t imagine doing if it wasn’t for my blog and the internet. I’ve been in movies, commercials, on TV, walked runways, spoke at conferences in Canada and US, and traveled all around the world. My favorite thing about it is that I documented it all and can go back and re-live it all anytime.
